 AG Attends Torch Run for
Special Olympics “Family and Friends Day”

On June 28, 2014, Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange attended the Alabama Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics “Family and Friends Day” at Splash Adventure Waterpark in Bessemer, Alabama. This special event included a ceremonial torch run within the park and a celebration of another successful year promoting Special Olympics in Alabama. In addition, the Alabama Torch Run for Special Olympics honored long-time liaison, Jon Barkley who coordinated torch run activities for many years. Barkley, who also serves as Competition Manager for Special Olympics Alabama, Inc. recently retired to take a position in the private sector.

During a luncheon ceremony, Alabama Torch Run officials recognized Barkley for his dedication and commitment to the Torch Run and Special Olympics. Attorney General Luther Strange presented a special plaque recognizing Barkley for the growth and success of these programs as a result of his involvement.

“As the Chief Law Enforcement Official in Alabama, I understand the importance of supporting law enforcement in their efforts, not only to protect our citizens, but also in serving our citizens through programs like Special Olympics. Today, we are here to honor Jon Barkley. We are happy to have had the opportunity to work with Jon, and we hate to see him go, but we know that no matter where he goes, he will always have a special place in our hearts for what he has done for Special Olympics and the Alabama Torch Run .”
