Alabama’s Immigration Law
Governor Bentley signed Act No. 2011-535, the Beason-Hammon Alabama Taxpayer and Citizen Protection Act, into law on June 9, 2011. Amendments to the law were made by Act No. 2012-491, which was signed into law on May 18, 2012.
Legal challenges to Alabama’s immigration law were defended by the Attorney General, as is his duty. Two of the lawsuits have resulted in orders enjoining parts of the law, while other parts of the law were upheld. The orders are available here and here. Additionally, further explanation of how the orders came about is available in joint reports of the parties available here and here.
